RTS on consoles?I bought Halo Wars last week after resolutely claiming I wouldn't. I was totally opposed to the idea of playing an RTS on the Xbox. Was I proved wrong? Well, yes and no really. If I were to play Halo Wars as it stands today on the PC, let's just say it wouldn't be my favourite game. But on the Xbox, it's a different story. The simplicity of the controls and combat actually work well together. What I think I like most about it though, is its jump in/jump out nature, and I say this after playing a two hour session of Company of Heroes! Having the ability to switch on, play for twenty minutes, then turn off is somethin PC RTS lack. You need to invest time with a PC game, whereas with a console game, most people want instantaneous gratification (a generalisation I know, but let's face it, it's true). Can RTS work on consoles? Well, prior to playing Halo Wars, I would have said no, but now, I think they can. They'll never be as in-depth as the PC allows, but I suppose Ensemble Studios' title is a starting point. Got an opinion? Sharing is caring so put it out there! Why not comment on this article?. But first, sign up for a Faceoff Games account - it is real easy and besides there's lots of benefits:

Yeah, when I was playing halo wars. The clunkyness of the controls was hugely aparent compared to the accuract of a keyboard and mouse combo. Plus the huge difference in resolution really puts me off consoles in general, although I generally find that there are good artistically styled cell-shaded games out there.
I don't know anything about Halo Wars, so don't know how they handle the interface, but generally speaking, I'd say "kind of, but..."
Back in the nineties I was a big fan of RTS (still am, mostly) and I played the Command & Conquor games a lot - on Playstation! It worked well enough and it certainly didn't bother me.
Nowadays, I only play RTS games on PC - the last few I've played being, in no particular order, Company of Heroes, World in Conflict and Soldiers of World war 2 and Red Alert 3 (I don't game as much as I used to, unfortunately). I don't think I'd enjoy playing these on consoles as much as I did on PC - I'd certainly miss the high resolution (because, lets face it, most RTS make me look for small graphical artifacts, err, I mean my soldiers) and the keyboard & mouse controls. Having said that, my console gaming background tells me that yes there RTS can be made work on consoles.
